About Us
 

We are a second section band based in Porthleven with members from the village and surrounding areas. As mentioned on our home page, the band first began in Porthleven in 1866 and has been a core part of the local community ever since. We take immense pride in representing our village both within Cornwall and contesting in Torquay twice a year where we aim to rise through the ranks. Our hard work was proven when we attended our last contest in November as we brought home four trophies in total: Winner of the Third Section, Winner of the Second Section, Best Horn Section and The Soloist Award.

We practice twice a week in our recently acquired band room, The Old Sunday School, which was used as such by the village for decades before being turned into a holiday home. Now the stunning building has been returned to community use, we are not only able to rehearse there, but hold small concerts, fundraisers and even use it as an alternative venue for rained-off events. We practice on Monday and Thursday nights from 19:30 - 21:30 and welcome anyone who wishes to sit in and listen to a rehearsal.

 

As a registered charity, we rely solely on donations and fees to exist. You can find out more about our expenses and how to donate on our 'Donate' page. We try our best to hold as many fundraisers as possible but also enjoy playing concerts as a source of income. Not only do we play outside the Harbour Inn every Sunday evening in the summer but we have played for several weddings, festivals and other local community events. We are also very fortunate to have a loyal band of supporters nearby who give up their time to help us collect, both with our shakers and our new contactless card machines.

We are a band family who works hard inside and outside of the band room - several of our members not only have musical roots but are one of many generations who have been part of the band. We also welcome newer members into our friendly band with open arms to help improve our band sound and spread the joy of music.
